The Thread by Victoria Hislop
This book had me from hello!!!! It was our latest book club read and it was a cracker - you just fly through the story getting completely involved with the characters. The writing and description is just fab. Once finished I promptly got her other two books, The Island & The Return. Can't wait to get stuck into them!!!
The Thread is set in Greece and is a story about a boy and a girl and how they meet and get separated and fall in love!! It is brilliantly done and you are curious about each and every character all through the book.
Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks
I love this book - so detailed and I mean possibly the most detailed book I have read in a long long time. But the stories about the war, about the love between Stephen and Isabelle and the other people you meet along the way really grab you and you can nearly feel what they are feeling it is so intensely described. It is written beautifully and just transports you to another place entirely!
The BBC recently did a 2 part series of Birdsong and I have to say I think they did an amazing job it was very true to the book I thought although it took some liberties with timelines, which I have to say I understand very well!
